Brampton Steelheads News Release
Brampton, Ontario - The Mississauga Steelheads and the Canadian Mental Health Association - Peel Branch (CMHA Peel) are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of mental health during the Steelheads home game on February 26,2016. This initiative is part of Talk Today, a joint CMHA and Ontario Hockey League project that aims to promote the mental health of young athletes and raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention.
This highly-anticipated game on February 26th at 7:30 pm at the Hershey Centre sees the Steelheads facing off against the Owen Sound Attack. This Talk Today event aims to combat stigma by starting a conversation around mental health and encouraging young people to seek help when they need it.
"A hockey rink is not typically a place where mental health issues are addressed, so this partnership with the Steelheads presents a wonderful opportunity increase mental health awareness with young fans and families. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 24. OHL players and many OHL fans fall into this age bracket, making these awareness games especially important."
The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by the Mississauga Steelheads and CMHA Peel to implement Talk Today. Announced in October 2014, Talk Today is a partnership between the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and CHMA Ontario. It provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health and suicide throughout OHL communities.
"The Mississauga Steelheads partnership with CMHA Peel has been extremely positive for our players, billet families, parents and staff. SafeTalk, ASIST and other educational programs have been informative, practical and important for the overall welfare of our players."
A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide. Every OHL team received mental health training specific to suicide awareness last season and new players were trained this fall. Each team is also now linked to a CMHA Mental Health Coach, who provides support and mental health resources to individuals in need.
A bonus for fans - $15 tickets for the game can be ordered through CMHA Peel and include a Pre/Post game skate, allowing fans and families to skate on the same ice as their hometown heroes. To take advantage of this special offer visit peel.cmha.ca or contact Stephen Tihal at (905) 502 - 7788 x240. A portion of the proceeds from these ticket sales will benefit CMHA Peel's Youth Net, a for youth-by youth program that generates mental health awareness, promotes resiliency and connects youth to information and services.
