North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - Mike Amadio of the North Bay Battalion has been named the Ontario Hockey League's Player of the Week for the period ended Sunday, the league announced Monday.
Centre Amadio scored seven goals and earned two assists for nine points in four games.
"It's an unbelievable feeling," said Battalion captain Amadio, 19. "There are a lot of great players in this league, so it's a great feeling to be named Player of the Week."
Said coach Stan Butler: "I'm really happy for him. Obviously, he's been on a roll here for a while, so it's great for him to get some league recognition for what he's done for himself, the organization and his teammates."
After setting a franchise record with five goals in a 6-5 road loss to the Kingston Frontenacs on Feb. 13, Amadio opened last week with two goals, including the winner, in a 3-2 victory over the host Ottawa 67's in a Family Day matinee Monday.
He had two goals, including the winner, and one assist as the Battalion routed the visiting Sudbury Wolves 9-1 Thursday night and scored one goal in a 5-1 road win over the Mississauga Steelheads on Friday night.
Amadio provided two goals, again including the winner, and one assist in a 9-3 triumph Sunday over the visiting Peterborough Petes.
Amadio, a Sault Ste. Marie native who was a second-round pick in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection, has 42 goals and 42 assists for 84 points in 56 games for the Battalion, which boasts a won-lost-extended record of 30-18-8 for 68 points, second in the Central Division and third in the Eastern Conference.
A third-round selection by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2014 National Hockey League Draft, Amadio is on an 11-game points streak during which he has 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points.
He's the fifth player in Battalion history to score 40 goals in a season and the first to do so since relocation to North Bay from Brampton in 2013. Raffi Torres scored 43 in 1999-00, Wojtek Wolski a franchise-record 47 in 2005-06, Cody Hodgson 40 in 2007-08 and 43 in 2008-09, and Evgeny Grachev 40 in 2008-09.
Amadio is the third member of the Battalion to receive recognition as OHL Player of the Week this season. Left winger Zach Bratina, who was forced to quit hockey because of concussion issues, was honoured for the period ended Oct. 18 and goaltender Jake Smith for the period ended Dec. 20.
