Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
EDINBURG, Texas-The Edinburg Coyotes (27-33) were down six heading into the sixth inning but due clutch hitting from Eric Gonzalez and Alex Entrekin, the Coyotes were able to escape with an 8-6 victory over the Harlingen WhiteWings (17-42) Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Coyotes are now just only one game behind the Laredo Broncos after they lost to the Alexandria Aces.
It wasn't just Gonzalez and Entrekin that pulled through, but the entire team got hits when they really needed to. The offensive rally began after a game changing grand slam from Gonzalez that cut a 6-0 lead to only two runs.
John Maschino picked up his third win of the season and Bobby Darling picked up his fifth loss after he gave the lead in the bottom of the eighth.
For the third straight game, the WhiteWings were able to score first as Kevin Griffen hit an RBI single which brought in David Fowler from second to the WhiteWings a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Ryan Fox hit an two-run RBI double bringing in Griffen from the third and David Cardona from first giving the WhiteWings a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.
In the top of the fifth, WhiteWings stuck again after David Cardona singled and Fox reached on an error by the left fielder moving Cardona over to second. Joel Gonzalez then singled advancing Fox to second and Cardona over to third but Cardona scored on an error by the left fielder to give the WhiteWings a 4-0 lead. Trey Hendricks then hit a two-run RBI double bringing Fox and Gonzalez giving the WhiteWings 6-0 lead.
But in the bottom of the sixth, Coyotes began their rally. With two outs and the bases loaded, Gonzalez crushed a 3-1 pitch from over the left field wall to giving the Coyotes new life and cutting the lead to two. It was the second grand slam of the season for the Coyotes and Gonzalez's fifth home run. Mayobanex Santana started the seventh inning with a triple down the left field line. He then scored on a sacrifice fly from Alex Entrekin putting the score at 6-5.
In the eighth inning, Gonzalez singled to right field and advanced to right off a Brandon McConnell doubled to right field. After Santana was intentionally walked, Amado German hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Gonzalez to tie the game a six. Entrekin then singled up the middle driving in McConnell and Santana giving the Coyotes an 8-4 lead.
