Close Road Game Ends as a Loss for Bears

July 27, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears started a five-game road series with a 5-4 loss to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Wednesday night. The Bears fell to 0-2 in the second half, while the Volcanoes improved to 2-0.

The Bears started the scoring with three runs in the third. Zach Jones led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a single from David Narodowski. Narodowski scored that inning as well when Tyler Bream hit a two-run home run over the right field fence to put the Bears in front 3-0.

The Volcanoes scored a single run in both the second and fifth innings before a two-run home run is the sixth inning gave Salem-Keizer a 4-3 lead. That home run would chase Bears starter John Pedrotty, who faced two batters in the sixth without recording an out and finished with four earned runs allowed in six ininnings.

The Bears tied the game in the top of the eighth inning, as a fielder's choice groundball with the bases loaded by Marc Bourgeois scored Garrett Weber.

The tie was short lived. A Joe Staley double in the bottom of the eighth plated Joe Panik to put the Volcanoes in front 5-4. The Bears threatened to score in the ninth inning, but couldn't key the key hit at the end.

Besides the starter Pedrotty, both Mike Blake and Justin Albert pitched in the game, as all three pitchers used by the Bears in the game were left handed. Blake recorded five strikeouts in two scoreless innings and Albert took the loss after giving up one run in one inning.

The Bears were outhit 11-9. Westley Moss and Tyler Bream each finished with two hits. Besides Bream's home run, Jones and Weber each hit a double in the defeat.

A play at the plate with the Bears in the field ended with Zach Jones being taken off the field. The collision that allowed the Volcanoes first run to score left Jones with a leg injury that has yet to be evaluated.

The Bears and Volcanoes play game two of the five-game series Thursday at 6:35. The pitching match-up at Volcanoes Stadium is expected to be right-handed pitchers Brad Wilson of the Bears and Lorenzo Mendoza of the Volcanoes.
