Iowa Cubs News Release
Nashville, TN - The Iowa Cubs (53-84) scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to pull within a run, but the Nashville Sounds (64-73) held on for a 4-3 win tonight at Greer Stadium. The Sounds lead this series 1-0 and lead the season series 7-6. Tonight was the Cubs' minor-league leading 54th one-run game of the season. The Cubs are 22-32 in one-run games, including an 8-22 mark on the road.
The Sounds took an early lead against their former teammate, Seth McClung. McClung started the season with Nashville before getting released by the Milwaukee Brewers and July 30 and signing with the Cubs on August 12. McClung allowed a two-out RBI single to Taylor Green in the bottom of the first inning and a solo homer to Caleb Gindl leading off the bottom of the second that put the Sounds up 2-0.
The Cubs answered with a run in the top of the fourth when Greg Rohan blasted a long home run off Sounds' starter Brian Baker. It was Rohan's fourth home run with Iowa this season and his 21st combined over three levels in the Cubs' organization this year. Rohan is second among all Cubs' minor leaguers with 106 RBI.
The turning point in the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, the Cubs elected to intentionally walk Gindl and face Dayton Buller with the bases loaded. Buller came through with a two-run single to right-center field that extended the Sounds' lead to 4-1.
Rohan's home run was one of three hits and the only run that Baker allowed through six innings. Brandon Kintzler followed with two scoreless innings in relief to set up Rob Wooten for a save opportunity in the ninth. After two quick outs, Rohan singled to extend the inning and Dave Sappelt walloped a home run to left to pull the Cubs to within one at 4-3. Wooten regrouped and got Jim Adduci to ground out to end the game.
Baker (4-4) earned the victory while McClung (3-15) suffered his second loss with Iowa and his league-leading 15th defeat overall on the year. Wooten was credited with his sixth save.
The Cubs and Sounds continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05. LH Horacio Ramirez (0-0, 1.38) is scheduled to start for the Cubs against RH Tyler Thornburg (1-2, 2.79) for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
