Memphis Shuts out Storm Chasers

Memphis, TN - Scott Gorgen spun seven scoreless innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter, as Memphis blanked Omaha, 5-0, Tuesday night in the second of four meetings at AutoZone Park. The Storm Chasers lost for just a seventh time in their last 22 road games to slip to 81-57 overall and 7-7 against the Redbirds after being shutout for the fifth time this season.
Gorgen issued two walks and another batter reached on an error but nobody had advanced to second base before Anthony Seratelli broke up the right-hander's no-hit bid with a two-out triple in the sixth inning. He got Max Ramirez to ground out to end the frame and then allowed an infield hit to David Lough in the seventh before inducing Rey Navarro to bounce into an inning-ending double play to finish off his night. The 25-year-old Gorgen walked two and struck out three in the longest of his eight Triple-A outings and was followed by Sam Freeman, who worked around a couple of two-out base hits in the eighth, and Barrett Browning, who yielded a lonely single in the ninth.
Omaha starter Ryan Verdugo retired the side in order in the first inning but got himself in trouble in the second by issuing walks to Brock Peterson and Eugenio Velez to begin the frame. The runners advanced on a Cedric Hunter sacrifice bunt and then scored on a base hit by Pete Kozma to give the Redbirds their first lead of the series. After a Bryan Anderson single, Vance Albitz doubled to plate Kozma and push Anderson to third, from where he scored on an Adron Chambers ground out to complete a four-run rally.
The 25-year-old southpaw battled his control again in the third, as he walked the bases loaded before Kozma singled in the final run of the night. Verdugo took the loss after yielding five runs on four hits and five free passes in only three innings during his final regular season turn. Former Nebraska Cornhusker Michael Mariot took over and tossed five shutout frames, retiring the last 11 batters he faced, to make his Triple-A debut a very memorable one.
