Clippers supplying Nationals
August 20, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
When relief pitcher Jesus Colome pitched a perfect seventh inning Saturday vs. the Toledo Mud Hens, he became the record 22nd player this season to play for both the Clippers and the Nationals. He also became the second Clipper to play for Columbus as the farm club of the Nationals and the Yankees. Brandon Claussen was the first.
Over the past 80 years, Columbus has been the top minor league team of the Nationals, Yankees, Pirates, Athletics, Cardinals and Reds. There have been many men who have played for the different Columbus franchises.
Relief pitcher Al Holland hurled for the Clippers when they were the Pirates' Triple-A team in 1977-78 and returned to pitch for Columbus in 1986-87 (Yankees).
Bob Oliver played outfield for the Jets in 1966 and eleven years later played first base for the Clippers in 1977. The Clippers first manager, Tim Murtaugh also caught two games for the Jets in 1968.
Two Clippers managers, Gene "Stick" Michael and Frank Verdi played for the Jets. Verdi was the first player that Harold Cooper signed for the Jets in 1955.
The Jets first manager, Nick Cullop (1955-56) had been a star for the Red Birds in the 1930's. His pitching coach for the Jets, Red Barrett is the only man to play for both the Red Birds and Jets franchises.
Six Reds farmhands of the 1930 Columbus Senators played for the 1931 Columbus Red Birds (Cardinals). They were player-manager Nemo Leibold, outfielder Pid Purdy and pitchers Ken Ash, Russ Miller, Percy Jones and Larry Winters.
When Columbus was an independent ball club (pre-1927), there were a number of players who returned to play for the Buckeyes and Senators teams.
For five seasons (1883-84, 1889-1891) Columbus was a major league ball club. Five of our major leaguers came back to play for a Columbus minor league club later in their careers. They were outfielders Fred Mann and Patsy Cahill, third basemen Willie Kuehne and Voiceless Tim O'Rourke and pitcher Eddie "Dummy" Dundon. Kuehne and catcher Rudy Kemmler were the only two men to play for both of Columbus' major league franchises.
Who will be the record 23rd Clipper/National this season?
Interesting note: Prior to the game tonight at The Coop, Columbus' Harold Cooper and the late George Sisler, Jr. will be inducted into the International League's Hall of Fame.
Don't forget tonight is Dime-A-Dog Night... I'll bring the mustard!
