Clinton's Pitching Shines Again in Series Finale Loss for Burlington

June 29, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Clinton, IA. - The Burlington Bees (31-45) were once again victims of another great performance on the mound by the Clinton LumberKings (44-33), as they fell in the series finale 4-1. Clay Chandler (4-1) earned his fourth victory in just his eighth start for the LumberKings, going six innings, allowing one run on two hits, and walked three. Mitchell Traver (5-6) loss his third straight contest after another frustrating evening. Traver threw four and two thirds innings, allowed two runs on six hits, walked two, and struck out two. Traver has now allowed nine runs on 17 hits in his last 13 innings pitched.

Costello and McGovern let it fly in the fourth

Ryan Costello has been a big homerun hitter all season for the LumberKings and showed that again last night. Costello led the bottom of the fourth off with a solo homerun for his 14th of the season and currently has the most in the Midwest League. Later on, Keegan McGovern who only had one homerun entering last night's game wanted that same feeling and he sent a solo shot to center for his second of the season, giving Clinton a 2-0 lead after the fourth.

Bees only manage one in the fifth

Burlington looked like they were right back in the ballgame in the top half of the fifth, Keinner Pina led the inning off with a single, Spencer Griffin drew a walk, and Julio Garcia reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Connor Fitzsimons then hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Pina and cut the Clinton lead to 2-1. However, Jeyson Sanchez grounded into a double play to end the inning, allowing the LumberKings to escape with only run one given up.

Adams tacks on another two in the sixth

Dimas Ojeda led the bottom of the sixth off with his 16th double of the season and was brought in on a two run homerun by Johnny Adams, giving the LumberKings a 4-1 lead. The homerun gave Adams his sixth homerun of the season and drove in his 26th and 27th runs this year.

Burlington had an opportunity in the ninth after a one out hit from Pina to put runners on first and second, but Griffin and Garcia both struck out, giving the LumberKings a 4-1 win.

Costello continues an impressive season

Ryan Costello has been a fun player to watch all season for the LumberKings and is definitely in the conversation as one of the best hitters in the Midwest League. Along with leading the league in homers, Costello is tied for most RBI's with 56, tied for seventh with 17 doubles, and is third in the league with a .533 slugging percentage.

LumberKings bullpen shines again

The Clinton bullpen once again kept the Bees off the board with another impressive night on the mound. Marvin Gorgas appeared in this 13th game and earned his second hold, after going two innings, allowing just a walk, and striking out two. Sam Delaplane ran into some trouble in the ninth, giving up a walk and a single, but still got three strikeouts in the inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Bees patience doesn't pay off

The Bees were very patient on offense tonight, drawing five walks, only striking out five times, and they forced Clinton to throw 132 pitches. Unfortunately, the patience didn't pay off in the hit department, as Burlington managed just three the whole game. Burlington also had seven scoring opportunities in the game, but only managed to score their lone run on Fitzsimons' sac fly. Pina did have a good night going 2-4 and Franklin Torres reached base twice on a single and a walk. However, Kevin Williams Jr's hit streak ended last night after going 0-4 at the plate.

Looking Ahead

The Bees are finally back in action at Community Field tomorrow night at 6:30, as they'll begin their six game homestand against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Burlington is expected to throw their ace starter Luis Madero, who is 2-5 with a 3.19 ERA in twelve starts. Cedar Rapids are going to go with Bailey Ober. Despite a 5.16 ERA, Ober is still 3-1 in nine starts this season and has stuck out six or more in his last four starts. Madero and others will have to get ready for a very good Cedar Rapids lineup, who has four regular starters hitting over .300.
