Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron right-hander Mike Clevinger earned his first AA win with a strong six-inning effort Sunday afternoon as the RubberDucks trounced the Trenton Thunder, 9-3, in the finale of a three-game series at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Turning Point
The RubberDucks (12-11) scored four runs in the first inning against Trenton starter Taylor Garrison (1-2). Tyler Naquin and Todd Hankins had back-to-back singles to start the game, and Erik Gonzalez reached on an error to load the bases. Anthony Gallas followed with a sharp single up the middle to drive in two runs. One out later, Tony Wolters lined a base hit to drive in Gonzalez, and Bryson Myles capped the rally by chipping in an RBI fielder's choice to make it 4-0.
Mound Presence
Clevinger (1-1) was outstanding in a starting role for Akron. Making his fifth start of the season, Clevinger worked six innings and scattered seven hits. He did not issue a walk, and matched his season-high with seven strikeouts. The Thunder (11-12) did not score off Clevinger until the sixth inning when Eric Jagielo doubled, moved to third on a single by Gary Sanchez, and scored on a double-play grounder. The win was Clevinger's first at the Double-A level. Righthanded reliever Grant Sides worked the final three innings and earned his first AA save.
Duck Tales
Naquin reached base five times on two hits and three walks. He also stole two bases, drove in a run, and scored once. Now hitting an even .400 since coming off the disabled list on April 24th , Naquin extended his hitting streak to seven
games (14-32, .438). Gonzalez ripped a home run to left field leading off the third inning, his second dinger of the season. Gonzalez had five hits in the series, all of which went for extra bases (3 2B's, 3B, HR). Myles added a two-run double in the fifth, giving him three RBI on the day. Wolters collected three hits on the day and also executed a sacrifice bunt.
