Norfolk Tides News Release

June 17, 2007 - Kurt Birkins pitched six shutout innings and Morgan Clendenin slugged his first Triple-A home run, leading the Tides to a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons Sunday afternoon.

Birkins allowed just four hits and two walks, striking out seven in improving to 4-2 on the season. In five home games this year, Birkins is now 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA (3-ER, 27.0-IP).

Clendenin got the Tides on the board in the bottom of the 3rd, driving a long drive off the right field scoreboard to give Norfolk a 1-0 lead. The Tides added a single run in the 4th inning on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Fahey, and plated another on a wild pitch in the 8th frame.

Sean Smith (5-5) took the loss for Buffalo, surrendering two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. Smith walked two and struck out four.

Tides reliever Paul Shuey yielded a leadoff home run to Jonathan Van Every leading off the 9th inning, but retired the next three batters to pick up his first save of the season. Shuey last recorded a save during the 2002 season when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The win helped Norfolk split the four-game set with Buffalo, the third straight four-game series in which the Tides have split.

Norfolk welcomes the Charlotte Knights to town on Monday night for a four-game series. Tim Kester (3-6, 6.75) is set to take the hill for the Tides against Charlotte knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (3-8, 5.77), with first pitch slated for 7:15.

Monday night is also Turn-Back-The-Clock Night at Harbor Park, as all Gwaltney Hot Dogs, Coke's and popcorn are just 25 cents. The Tides will be wearing throwback uniforms in the contest, and the evening is sponsored by Gwaltney and Coca-Cola.
