Charlotte Independence News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2015) - The Charlotte Independence today announced the signing of the seventh player in the USL expansion team's history. Midfielder/defender Jack Metcalf has agreed to terms and will join the Independence for training camp beginning February 23.
"Jack knows how to play the game and plays with passion," said Independence General Manager Tom Engstrom. "He will fit in well with the group that is being assembled." Head Coach Mike Jeffries added, "Jack is a clever, technical player who brings versatility, a high soccer IQ and a strong competitive passion to the group."
Metcalf said the Independence was a club that stood out to him from the moment the USL announced the new franchise. "I have heard only good good things about the future of the Independence, and under the guidance of Mike, Tom and the entire coaching staff, the offer to join Charlotte was one I could not let pass up."
Metcalf graduated from Clemson University in 2013, where he was a key member of the back line and starter for most of his four-year career. The fullback was credited with three assists his senior season, which tied for second on the team. Metcalf helped the Tigers reach the ACC Tournament semifinals and qualify for the NCAA Tournament. He was named a Third Team All-ACC selection.
Following graduation, Metcalf returned to his native England, where he spent time training with several professional clubs. He recently returned to Clemson to train for the upcoming season with several other Tigers alumni. "We are all getting ready to start new chapters with guys joining the MLS, NASL and USL," he said. "It has been a very successful offseason for us."
Prior to moving to the U.S. to begin his collegiate career, Metcalf played in the Liverpool FC and Wolverhampton FC youth systems. He also was called into camp for the U-16 England National Team.
"I would like to thank Tom, Mike and the Colorado Rapids staff for giving me this opportunity," said Metcalf. The Rapids and Independence in September reached a two-year MLS/USL affiliation agreement. "I also want to thank Mike Noonan and the coaching staff at Clemson for always sticking by me."
The 23-year-old Metcalf joins an Independence roster that already includes Jorge Herrera, Ben Newnam, Patrick Slogic, Andrew Ribeiro, Paolo DelPiccolo and Brandon Fricke.
"Heading into the inaugural Independence season, the squad that is being put together already looks like one that can be very successful in the USL," said Metcalf. "My goal is to help the team as much as I can towards that achievement and bring silverware to the city of Charlotte."
The Independence will open the 2015 USL season at home against local rival the Charleston Battery on Friday, March 27. The match will be played at 7:30pm on UNC-Charlotte's Transamerica Field. "I am really looking forward to playing in front of the home fans in Charlotte," said Metcalf. "I can't wait for the season to start and am sure the Independence fans will be out in full voice."
