USA Rugby to Return to Bonney Field for Match Against Japan on July 24

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (February 19, 2015) - USA Rugby will return to Bonney Field in a Pacific Nations Cup double-header that includes USA versus Japan and Fiji versus Samoa. Both matches will take place on Friday, July 24 at Bonney Field. Times to be announced.

"We realized the connection between Sacramento and rugby early on and advocated with the Sacramento Sports Commission to secure a USA Rugby match in Sacramento," said Sacramento Republic FC President Warren Smith. "Last year's sellout was a further testament to the size and depth of the rugby community in the Sacramento region."

USA Rugby defeated Canada, 38-35, in front of a sold out crowd of 7,804 at Bonney Field on June 21, 2014. The match was the first time Sacramento had hosted an international rugby match and the first time USA had beat Canada since 2009. This year's match will take place during the California State Fair, the perfect opportunity for fans to experience both the fair and an international rugby match with the purchase of their match ticket.

"Sacramento is an excellent destination for rugby players, fans and supporters, as a very passionate Bonney Field crowd demonstrated last June," said Mike Sophia, Director of the Sacramento Sports Commission. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome USA Rugby back to Sacramento, along with an elite international field, including Japan, Samoa and Fiji."

The Sacramento region has strong ties with the sport of rugby developing several USA national team members including Blaine Scully, Eric Fry, Thretton Palamo and Louis Stanfill. Northern California has produced more USA national team members than almost any other region in the United States.

As part of the Pacific Nations Cup, USA Rugby will also play a match at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. on July 18. Ticket information for all Pacific Nations Cup matches will be released at a later date but fans interested in tickets may signup for information on usarugby.org.
