Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Brian Pointer's two-out RBI double in the ninth inning pulled the Threshers to within a run, but Clearwater would fall short in a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Yankees on Tuesday night at Bright House Field.
Pointer's double scored Art Charles from first, and also extended his hitting streak to eight games. With Pointer representing the tying run at second base, Cesar Vargas got pinch hitter Chris Serritella to strike out to end the ballgame.
Tampa (3-3) jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage against starter Miguel Nunez (2-5).
With Jake Cave at second, following a single and an error on center fielder Roman Quinn, Greg Bird shot a single down the left field line to plate Cave and make it 1-0.
Two innings later, Bird and Dante Bichette Jr. drew back-to-back walks to open the frame, before Matt Snyder turned on a 2-1 pitch and homered out to right-center to make it a 4-0 game, and end the night for Nunez.
Kevin Walter would come on to work the next four innings, holding Tampa scoreless on two hits. Walter combined with Ramon Oviedo and Cody Forsythe as the Threshers' bullpen hurled seven scoreless frames, allowing only three hits without walking a batter.
Clearwater (3-3) got on the board in the fourth inning, after KC Serna walked and Brandon Short singled through the left side. Art Charles flew out to deep right, allowing Serna to tag and advance to third, and Harold Martinez brought Serna home with a grounder to second.
The Threshers cut the deficit further in the sixth. Serna and Short connected for back-to-back two-baggers, making it a 4-2 game.
On Wednesday the Threshers will look to even up the series, with lefty Ethan Stewart (4-6) toeing the rubber opposed by Luis Severino (0-1). First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on Camp Day at Bright House Field, and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network beginning at 11:45 a.m.
