Cubs Take Opener as T-Yanks Fall, 11-4

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (1-2) and the Daytona Cubs (2-1) combined for 28 hits and 15 runs as the T-Yanks dropped the series opener to the Cubs, 11-4 on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Yankees' starter Conner Kendrick had an outing to forget as Daytona exploded for six runs against the southpaw in the third.

The first two batters reached base before Zeke Devoss hit an RBI double, putting the Cubs on top. The inning was far from over as Wes Darvill added an RBI single. Dan Vogelbach drove in a run with a groundout to shortstop before BijanRademacher reached on a fielder's choice. A single by Gioskar Amaya placed two runners on base and Rock Shoulders crushed a backbreaking three-run home run into the Walgreens Deck in right field.

Kendrick (3-4) yielded six runs on five hits and four walks, striking out one in two and two-third innings of work.

RHP Chris Smith recorded the final out of the third and pitched through the fifth. Rademacher hit a leadoff double in the frame for Daytona and later scored on a single by Jordan Hankins.

Justin Amlung pitched five shutout innings for the Cubs before leaving the sixth with two on and no outs. Yeicock Calderon singled against reliever JasvirRakkar, driving in Greg Bird from third. One out later, Matt Snyder added an RBI single.

Both runs were charged to Amlung (1-2). The righty worked over five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks.

Daytona added more insurance in the seventh against RHP Stefan Lopez. Shoulders led off with a double and scored on a home run by Hankins off the foul poll in right field. With runners on the corners, Lopez dealt a wild pitch, scoring another run. A single by Voglebach allowed the final run of the game to cross the plate.

The Yankees added two runs in the seventh against reliever Austin Kirk. Jake Cave led off with a walk and advanced to third on a ground-rule double by Bird. A groundout by Dante Bichette Jr. scored Cave and a single by Calderon chased Bird home for the fourth Tampa run.

Kirk pitched three complete innings of relief, earning his first career save.

Bird led the offense for Tampa, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and two runs scored. Calderon picked up two RBI, going 2-for-4.

The series continues on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as Tampa southpaw Miguel Sulbaran (1-1, 3.50 ERA) goes up against LHP Rob Zastryzny (1-6, 5.80 ERA) of Daytona.

Seniors eat free on Sunday home games with the Tampa Yankees. Fans ages 55 and over receive a coupon for a free scooter dog, small popcorn and a small soda, with the purchase of a $5 reserved ticket. Also, kids ages 14 and under receive free admission.
