De Paula Solid in T-Yanks Shutout over Cubs

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (2-3) tossed their fifth shutout of the season in an 8-0 win over the Daytona Cubs (3-2) on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The win snapped a three-game skid and help Tampa avoid a sweep by Daytona.

Rafael De Paula (3-5) pitched five and two-third shutout frames. The righty had struggled in his prior two starts, allowing a total of 13 earned runs over three innings. De Paula scattered five hits and a walk while striking out seven in the win.

Tampa received all the offense it needed in the third against Daytona starter Tayler Scott.

A fielding error at third allowed Jose Rosario on first. Jake Cave hit an infield single towards shortstop and Cito Culver reached on a bunt single, loading the bases for Greg Bird. A sacrifice fly scored the first Tampa run and a single by Dante Bichette Jr. chased home Cave. With Matt Snyder at the plate, a wild pitch by Scott allowed Culver to score. A second wild pitch let Bichette take third base as Snyder drew a walk. Aaron Judge reloaded the bases after drawing a walk and Danny Oh drove in two runs with a single to right-center.

Daytona brought in RHP Stephan Perakslisto stop the bleeding. A wild pitch by the reliever let Judge cross the plate for the sixth Tampa run before Perakslis retired the next two batters, ending the inning.

Scott (4-6) allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits in two and a third innings. The righty walked three and struck out one.

The Yankees tacked on two more runs in the eighth against RHP Yao-Lin Wang. Oh reached on a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double by Trent Garrison. Rosario gave Tampa an 8-0 cushion with a two-RBI single up the middle.

RHPs Nick Rumbelow and Alex Smith combined to toss the final three and a third innings.

Every Tampa Yankee reached base. Cave collected two singles, going 2-for-5. Judge hit his first triple of the season for Tampa, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk. De Paula pitched into the sixth inning for the first time since April 16th.

Up next, the T-Yanks hit the road for a three-game set in Clearwater. RHP Jaron Long (1-2, 3.46 ERA) will start game one as the Threshers counter with LHP Miguel Nunez (2-4, 5.87 ERA).
