Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD (MAY 2, 2011) - After seeing one lead slip away, the Dash responded with a fury in the seventh and eighth innings to beat back to the Frederick Keys 8-5 on Monday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Jake Oester had a two-out, two-run double in the seventh to send Winston-Salem into the lead for good as the Dash snapped their five-game losing streak.
Winston-Salem (9-15) struck for a run in the first inning when Daniel Wagner doubled and scored on a base hit by Jared Mitchell. In the fourth, Ian Gac hit his league-leading eighth home run of the season to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.
The Keys (10-13) got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Tyler Townsend homered off Hector Santiago to lead off the frame.
Kyle Colligan drove in another Dash run in the sixth with a base hit to left to make it 3-1.
The bottom of the sixth inning looked more like a bad horror movie remake than Winston would have wanted it to. As the Blue Rocks did on Sunday, the Keys rallied from behind to take a lead with three runs, in part thanks to some shaky defense. With Charlie Shirek pitching in relief, Frederick put a man at first with one out. Dale Mollenhauer then lined a pitch to right field. Jose Martinez made an ill-timed dive at the ball, which went past him and to the fence. A run scored and Mollenhauer ended up at third base with a triple.
After a walk and a pop out, Garabez Rose hit a ground ball up the middle that bounced off shortstop Daniel Wagner, allowing Mollenhauer to score and tie the game. After Hudson singled to load the bases, Santos Rodriguez entered the game and walked Trent Mummey to score a run and give Frederick a 4-3 lead.
Winston picked itself up off the mat in the seventh inning against Nick Haughian. Martinez struck out looking and was ejected for mildly arguing with home plate umpire John Bacon. After Haughian retired Mitchell, he walked Gac and Andy Wilkins. Oester followed with a double to the wall in right field that scored both runners and gave the lead back to the Dash.
Brandon Kloess worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the inning, giving Winston a chance to extend its lead in the eighth. The first two batters reached base in front of Nick Ciolli, who was batting in Martinez' spot in the lineup. Ciolli singled home a run with a base hit to center and then Mitchell reached base on a bunt to load the bases. After Gac grounded into a fielder's choice, Wilkins hit a two-run single to right field to bring home two more runs and up the Dash lead to 8-4.
The Keys got a run in the bottom of the ninth inning against Kloess, but could not manage to get any closer as Winston-Salem managed to win the first game of the series. Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win while Haughian (0-2) was charged with the loss. Kloess earned his second save with three tremendous innings of relief.
Notes: At three hours, 17 minutes, it was the longest nine-inning game of the season for the Dash... Santiago had perhaps his best start of the season, allowing just one run in five innings, but did not factor into the decision... Martinez' ejection was the first for a Dash player or coach this season... Winston set a new season-high with 12 men left on base and tied a season high with 12 hits... The Dash scored eight runs on Monday after scoring three total runs in three games against the Blue Rocks this past weekend...
The Dash and Keys play game two of their series on Tuesday evening. RHP Cameron Bayne (2-2, 3.60) starts for Winston-Salem opposite RHP Oliver Drake (1-0, 1.86). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the audio broadcast of the game beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night to start a six-game home stand against the Lynchburg Hillcats and Potomac Nationals.
