ABERDEEN, MD - Wilfredo Flores broke a 5-5 tie with a ninth inning RBI single and Jared Carr added a two-run single as the BlueClaws won their fourth straight game, topping Aberdeen 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Leidos Field.
Jersey Shore, who fell to 2-8 after a loss on Tuesday, won the last four games of the series to get to 6-8 while Aberdeen fell to 5-9.
Trailing 5-4, Nick Ward tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the 8th inning. Then in the ninth, Rixon Wingrove walked and Casey Martin was hit by a pitch. After IronBirds reliever Ignacio Feliz was ejected, Dan Hammer came on. He struck out Leandro Pineda, but Flores broke the tie and Carr blew the game open.
Tommy McCollum came on in the bottom of the ninth and got the last three outs, two with strikeouts, to end the game and give the BlueClaws their fourth consecutive win. Carlos Francisco (2-0), who got the last out of the eighth inning, earned the win. Feliz (0-2), was charged with both ninth inning runs and took the loss.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles from both Rixon Wingrove and Wilfredo Flores. Aberdeen, however, came right back to tie the game off Jersey Shore starter Gabriel Cotto in the bottom of the first. Frederick Bencosme walked to start the inning and Max Wagner then homered to level the score.
Leandro Pineda (pictured) broke the tie in the third inning with a two run home run, his first of the season.
Aberdeen got one back in the fifth when a Carlos Betancourt wild pitch allowed a run to score. They then took the lead in the seventh on Jud Fabian's 2-run home run off reliever Tristan Garnett.
Cotto came out after 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs.
Ward, Marcus Lee Sang, Wingrove, Flores, and Carr all had two hits for the BlueClaws. Flores has now hit safely in seven straight games and Wingrove is now 12 for his last 28.
The BlueClaws return home on Tuesday to open a six game series with Brooklyn (Mets) beginning at 6:05 pm.
