Winston-Salem Dash News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - The Winston-Salem Dash had the opportunity to pick up a second straight series win Sunday afternoon in Asheville against the Tourists. Trailing going into the final three innings, Winston-Salem put up six unanswered runs, rallying to take down Asheville in game six, 8-5, at McCormick Field in front of 2,525 fans.
Asheville (5-8) jumped out to an early lead plating two on a Ryan Wrobleski single in the bottom of the first against Winston-Salem (9-4) starter, Jonathan Cannon, but the lead was quickly erased after Taishi Nakawake continued his tear at the plate. The shortstop drove in two on a single to left in the top of the second to knot it up at two.
Cannon settled in after the first. The righthander mowed down the Tourists' batters over the next four innings, punching out a season high seven hitters. Cannon left in a tied game after five innings, allowing only three hits, two runs, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Winston-Salem went to the bullpen for the sixth, and the Tourists capitalized quickly. Wrobleski picked up his third RBI of the day on a single, and the Dash again trailed heading into the seventh.
After leaving runners on base all day, the Dash began finding the big hits trailing by one. With two outs in the seventh and a runner on, Wes Kath ripped his first triple of the year bringing in DJ Gladney, tying it up at three. The following batter, Alsander Womack, gave Winston-Salem the lead for good. He doubled bringing home Kath, and the Dash led for the first time, 4-3.
Chase Plymell was tabbed with the duty to hold the lead, and the Nevada, MO native worked a 1-2-3 seventh. Winston-Salem wanted insurance.
The Dash loaded the bases against Brayan De Paula with no outs, and Gladney doubled the lead with one swing of the bat, driving in Chris Lanzilli and Nakawake, on a single to center. Wilfred Veras stepped to the plate and extended the lead on a RBI base knock, putting the Dash up four, 7-3.
Winston-Salem was not done there. Kath, who was working on 2-for-4 day, picked up his second RBI bringing home Gladney on a single, and the Dash had the insurance they needed leading 8-3.
Plymell got through the eighth finishing the day with two shutout innings. In the ninth, the Tourists got two off Tristan Stivors, but the offense had done its job as Stivors limited the damage, ansthe Dash took game six and the series with an 8-5 win.
Kath and Nakawake both finished the day 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI to lead Winston-Salem, while Veras picked up a multi-hit day going 2-for-5. With the win, Winston-Salem has now taken its first two series on the year and sit in a tie for first in the South Atlantic League South division standings with the Hickory Crawdads.
The series win now sets up a showdown between the South division leaders. Winston-Salem welcomes Hickory to Truist Stadium for an eight-game series starting on Tuesday. Due to rainouts in Hickory on April 7th and 8th, the two teams will play doubleheaders this Tuesday and Saturday for the makeup. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader Tuesday is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
