'Claws Sweep Doubleheader from 'Birds

SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds ran into late trouble in both of their doubleheader games against the Lakewood BlueClaws, dropping game one 3-2 and game two 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Game One

Damon Jones (3-2) notched a quality start in a win for the BlueClaws, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings, walking three and striking out four. DL Hall (0-3) took the loss for the Shorebirds, going a career-long 5.2 innings while allowing three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out three. Addison Russ nailed down his 10th save with a scoreless seventh.

After cruising through his first two innings, Hall ran into trouble in the third. Rodolfo Duran led off and took him deep to left for a solo blast, his third of the season, to put Lakewood up 1-0.

The Shorebirds remained quiet offensively until Max Hogan went deep with two outs in the fourth. Hogan's first round-tripper of the season tied it at 1-1.

Lakewood struck again in the top of the sixth. Nick Maton walked with one out, followed by a Jhailyn Ortiz to push Maton to third. A wild pitch from Hall allowed Maton to score, and Daniel Brito's sac fly pushed Lakewood in front 3-1.

Delmarva got back with in one in the sixth. Ryan Ripken led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error from Dalton Guthrie, then took third after a wild pitch. Two batters later, Jean Carrillo came through with an RBI groundout to short, allowing Ripken to score make it a 3-2 game.

Russ allowed a one-out single to Kirvin Moesquit but nothing else in the seventh, getting groundouts from Seamus Curran and Zach Jarrett to end the ballgame.

Trevor Craport had two singles in a losing effort for the Shorebirds.

Maton had a solid game for Lakewood, going 1-for-3 with a single, walk, and two runs.

Game Two

With the Shorebirds (29-20) up 3-2 in the seventh, Ortiz led off with a solo home run to deep center field, tying the game at 2-2. Quincy Nieporte followed up with a double and came around to score after a Colby Fitch double, making it 3-2. Two-out RBIs from Josh Stephen, Jake Schneider, and Brito, plus two Delmarva errors, made it a six-run seventh and a 7-2 BlueClaws (28-21) lead.

Julian Garcia (2-1) picked up the win in relief for Lakewood, allowing one hit over two scoreless innings. Reed Hayes (0-3) endured the loss for Delmarva, allowing six runs on six hits in 2.2 frames.

Delmarva struck first in the nightcap. Moesquit reached via an error in the bottom of the first and promptly stole his 22nd base of the season. Mason McCoy then brought him around to score on an RBI single to put the Shorebirds in front 1-0.

The BlueClaws managed an unearned run off spot-starter Cameron Ming in the second. Colby Fitch led off with a single, then Gregori Rivero lined out to short, but McCoy's hasty throw to first sailed into the dugout, allowing Fitch to take third. Guthrie plated Fitch on a sac fly to make it 1-1.

Both offenses stayed quiet until the Delmarva fourth. Seamus Curran led off with an opposite field double and advanced to third on Ripken's flyout to right. Hogan then came up and blooped a single into shallow center, scoring Curran to give the Shorebirds a 2-1 lead.

Ming went four strong innings in the spot start for Delmarva allowing an unearned run on just one hit. Lakewood's Connor Brogdon allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over his four-inning start.

McCoy provided a bright spot offensively for the Shorebirds, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Fitch finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored for the BlueClaws.

The two losses were Delmarva's first time being swept in a doubleheader this season.

The Shorebirds wrap up their five-game series against the BlueClaws on Monday afternoon. Zac Lowther (3-1, 1.16) will look to get Delmarva back to their winning ways against Lakewood's David Parkinson (4-1, 1.85). First pitch of the Memorial Day matinee is set for 2:05 p.m. with gates opening at 1:00. Monday as usual is 47ABC $2 Buck Monday, as well as a Silver Slugger Game presented by Peninsula Home Care.
