Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD-Lakewood survived a 3-run 9th from Hagerstown, and RJ Swindle struck out Erick San Pedro with the winning run on 2nd base as Lakewood topped Hagerstown 8-7. Carlos Monasterios allowed 4 runs early, and then did not allow a hit after the 3rd inning, lasting 7 as Lakewood takes 2 out of 3 in the series.
Gus Milner was 3-4 and drove in 3 runs, while Kevin Howard added 3 RBIs and Julian Williams was 3-4 with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored hitting in the 2nd spot for the first time this year.
Monasterios (6-4) allowed 4 runs on just 4 hits, and has won 4 of his last 5 starts. He retired 12 of the last 14 he faced.
In the 9th, Swindle came in with the bases loaded, none out, and an 8-4 lead. After 1 run scored on a misplayed infield fly (though the infield fly rule got the first out), another scored when Gus Milner dropped a Justin Maxwell fly ball putting the tying run on base. An infield hit by Marcos Cabral made it 8-7. After a strikeout of Mike Daniel, manager Steve Roadcap elected to intentionally walk Chris Marrero, who had 4 RBIs in the game, to put the winning run on 2nd base, and Swindle struck out San Pedro to end it.
Swindle got his 3rd save of the year and 2nd in as many nights.
Lakewood took the lead in the 6th on a SAC fly by Milner, and added an insurance run on Kevin Howard's RBI single to open a 6-4 advantage. Both runs were scored on reliever Aaron Jackson (3-3), who replaced starter Cory VanAllen in the 5th.
VanAllen allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, over 4 innings of work. He faced 2 batters in the 5th, both of whom came around to score to tie the game. Howard had an RBI groundout to score Julian Williams and a throwing error by Leonard Davis scored Milner to make it 4-4.
After Lakewood scored 2 in the first, Chris Marrero, Washington's 2006 1st round pick, put Hagerstown in front with his 13th homer of the year in the 2nd and a 3- run double in the 4th off of Monasterios. Justin Maxwell was 3-4 for the Suns after homering in the first 2 games of the series.
Lakewood's Quintin Berry went 0-2, ending his 14- game hitting streak, but walked twice and was hit by a pitch. He scored 3 runs, including 1 of 2 in a 2-run 8th which doubled the lead.
The BlueClaws will head to Salisbury, MD to open a 4- game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles) beginning Thursday night at 7:05. RHP Ben Pfinsgraff (2-1 1.08), who was named to the SAL All-Star Team Wednesday, will make his 2nd start of the year for the BlueClaws after opening the year as a relief pitcher. He'll be opposed by Delmarva RHP Jeff Moore (3-1, 2.01). You can hear the game on the Shore Sports Network (1160 WOBM-AM and 1310 WADB) beginning at 6:50.
