Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - Greensboro Grasshoppers starter Matt Montogomery dominated the BlueClaws bats Wednesday afternoon, as Lakewood had its five-game winning streak snapped 2-0.
Montgomery (5-8) held the Claws (10-3, 52-31) to just four hits in eight innings, striking out seven. He outdueled Lakewood starter Jonathan Pettibone (3-3), who kept the Hoppers (8-6, 40-44) in check until the seventh.
With two outs in the inning Pettibone was on a roll, having retired 16 straight and not allowed a base hit since the second. That all changed with one swing from Kyle Skipworth, who narrowly cleared the wall in left for his 13th home run of the season to put Greensboro up 1-0.
The Grasshoppers added an insurance run in the eighth off Pettibone on a Chad Cregar RBI single, and Alejandro Ramos closed it out in the ninth for his league-leading 18th save.
Despite taking the loss Pettibone pitched well, letting up just two runs on four hits in eight innings. He also struck out seven, and became the first BlueClaws pitcher to throw a complete game in a nine-inning affair since Carlos Monasterios accomplished the feat on July 7th, 2007.
Monasterios is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Thursday at 7:05 pm the BlueClaws return to FirstEnergy Park for a five-game homestand against the Delmarva Shorebirds. RHP Josh Zeid (5-2 3.00) will face RHP Pat Kantakevich (0-2, 3.70).
