Hickory Crawdads News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hickory Crawdads wound up on the bad end of an old-fashioned pitchers duel on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the final game of the series to the Delmarva Shorebirds, 2-1, before 2,536 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Delmarva (6-7, 38-45) got in front early against Crawdads starter RHP Jake Brigham in the bottom of the fourth inning. After issuing a leadoff walk to 3B Tyler Kelly, 1B Tyler Townsend singled to put runners at first and second. DH Kieron Pope moved the runners up to second and third on a groundout before CF Steve Bumbry hit a single to right, driving in Kelly from third for a 1-0 Shorebirds advantage.
Brigham allowed just the one run on three hits and two walks while fanning four in six innings pitched for Hickory.
The Crawdads (7-7, 47-37) tied the game in the seventh inning against Shorebirds starter RHP Kenny Moreleand. 1B Mike Ortiz led things off with a single and moved up to third when C Zach Zaneski reached on an error by SS Garabez Rosa. DH Cody Podraza then grounded into a double play, but Ortiz came in to score from third on the play, knotting the game up, 1-1.
Delmarva reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth with 'Dads releiver RHP Tyler Tufts (1-5, 5.17 ERA) on the mound. With C Luis Bernardo at second with one out, Tufts proceeded to walk RF Brian Conley and hit 1B Tyler Townsend to load the bases. Pope followed with a walk of his own to drive in Bernardo for the winning run, accounting for the 2-1 Shorebirds win.
Moreland surrendered one unearned run on four hits and a walk while striking out three in seven frames. Releiver RHP Thomas Phelps (2-0, 0.79) picked up the win for the Shorebirds, with RHP Josh Dowdy recording the save. Tufts was handed the loss for Hickory.
