Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Josh Romanski gave up just two earned runs in 7.0 full innings of work to lead the Charleston RiverDogs over the Asheville Tourists, 4-2, in front of 3,548 soaking wet fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Wednesday for Big Splash Day 2010.

With the victory Charleston improves to 6-8, 37-46 overall, while Asheville falls to 9-5, 38-45.

Romanski (3-2), who won his second straight, surrendered four hits in his 7.0 frames, with seven strikeouts. The former University of San Diego Torero has fanned 23 batters in last three starts combined.

Romanski had a perfect game through 3.0 innings, when Eliezer Mesa singled to open the fourth and moved into scoring position, when Romanski plunked Avery Barnes in the face, and taken out of the game for pinch-runner Delta Cleary, Jr. Nolan Arenado's RBI groundout plated Mesa from third for the 1-0 lead.

Charleston wasted little time responding, ripping off a three-hit, four-run bottom of the fourth against Asheville's Nick Schnaitmann. J.R. Murphy's sac fly to center with the bases loaded brought DeAngelo Mack home from third to knot the game at 1-1. Mack extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single to open the frame, then moved to third on Jimmy Paredes' 18th double of the season.

The RiverDogs took the lead on Rob Lyerly's RBI single that scored Paredes, 2-1. With the bases loaded, Schnaitmann hit Hector Rabago to bring Neil Medchill home from third.

With the bags full and one out, the big inning came to a close, when Emerson Landoni's line drive to shortstop Carlos Martinez was dropped, but thrown to second for a 6-4 force out. Second baseman Angelys Nina threw to third baseman Arenado that resulted in Kyle Higashioka being tagged out with the force play negated, but Lyerly scored before Higashioka was tagged out, giving Charleston a 4-1 lead going into the fifth.

Nina's RBI single to left scored Mesa and brought Asheville within two, 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.

Francisco Gil tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings for the RiverDogs, receiving a double play in each frame, in collecting his second save of the year.

Schnaitmann (6-6) takes the loss after giving up four earned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings on the bump. The Vacaville, Calif. native posts his first loss since May 20, spanning seven starts.

Mack, Paredes, and Medchill all had two hits for Charleston.

The RiverDogs head to the road to take on the Rome Braves for a five-game series. Game one is set for Thursday at 7 p.m., with Charleston sending right-hander Jose Ramirez (2-4, 3.42), while Rome counters with right-hander Cory Rasmus (5-4, 3.15)

-RIVERDOGS BALLPARK FUN: It was the RiverDogs' annual Big Splash Day! The entire ballpark played host to the biggest water fight in the city. The fans, and even the staff, had their squirt guns fully loaded for an afternoon of fun in the sun. The fire department loaned a hand as they hosed down fans along the third base line throughout the contest. Fans, and even some scouts, dodged water balloons all game long. We also said "adios!" to the Asheville Tourists with another Wild Wednesday featuring Mexican food!
