POSTGAME QUOTES
SAN DIEGO GULLS
Goaltender Calle Clang
On the importance of tonight's game
It was a big one. We haven't played these kinds of games in a long time. So, for us as a group, it was really important to get a strong start. I think we really did that. I thought, honestly, the whole team was phenomenal out there today, and it was a really good team effort.
On recording his third shutout of the season
Well, first of all I think our D-core made it really, really easy for me today. I saw most of the shots, and there was some huge block at the end there so credit to my teammates. I wouldn't be able to do this without them. For myself, I thought I got back to my game a little bit hard. Last couple weeks, I have been in and out my own game. I haven't really got the bounces either, so I felt today it was just back to basics. Try to stay calm, try to play as big as I could, making the pucks hit me and yeah, as I said, my D-core was awesome there.
On the message going into tonight
I think, like myself, getting back to the basics and for the team as well. I think this is the way we need to play down this last however many games are left, and then into playoffs, because it's going to be tight games all the way in. So, I think just playing mature, getting pucks out. That simple stuff that's not as simple all the time, I think we need to be really good at. I thought we were tonight.
On the upcoming game against Bakersfield
Hopefully it's big crowd. Usually, fans turn out on a Friday night, so I'm excited. It's going to be rocking in here, and we're going to get those two points and move on.
Defenseman Tyson Hinds
On opening the scoring tonight
That's a great pass, great look. I mean, I got to give credit all to [Cal Burke]. Like I said, the great pass and just being able to finish that, it was huge.
On holding the lead tonight
We saw it happen a few times, we gave up the lead against that team and against other teams too. So, we just wanted to keep the pressure on, keep on playing the same way. Right from the start, we were putting pressure, putting puck deep and we played really good too defensively. Our goalie was great when we needed him. Other than that, our defense was pretty, pretty tight.
On the team being in playoff mode
Oh, we are. I think every game is a big game, so next game is going to be huge too. I think as long as we keep playing like tonight, and keep playing hard and the Gulls way, I feel like we can beat any team here and get ready for the playoffs, for sure.
On the upcoming game against Bakersfield
It's a big game. Like I said, every game is pretty big. Our last Friday home game and we want to give a good big show to our crowd here. They've supported us through everything all year long, so we're going to be ready. We just need to play the same way we did tonight and pretty sure, we'll be fine no matter who it is.
Head coach Matt McIlvane
On what the message to the team was before tonight
I think we've been in the mentality of postseason hockey for a while now, and every game is a big game. Every moment's a big moment. And what we're doing is we're accumulating experiences that we can keep getting better at it and understanding how important all the little things are. As a coach, you have a vision for what your team's capable of and we checked a lot of boxes in the in the game today.
On the team playing with an early lead
You want to attack right away, and you don't want to sit back. You don't want guys thinking, you want to go and attack the opposition. And I thought we did that to get on the board first which is huge. Closing out games and hanging on to leads, it's something that is a skill set. And first of all, I thought Callie was fantastic, but team defense wise, there were sticks in every lane, and we had guys eating pucks and blocking at the end of the game. It was a well-deserved team shutout.
On Calle Clang
We know what Calle's capable of, and I think that he was strong. He made a couple big saves on two-on-ones, but team defense was great in front of him as well, and I'm certain that there was a lot of factors in the Shut up.
On facing Bakersfield on Friday night
They're as dynamic and explosive as anybody is offensively. They provide some unique challenges. We just saw them here recently. We know what to expect. We know they're going to be a handful.
