Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
The Idaho Falls Chukars continued their hot start to the 2012 season Wednesday night, as the greybirds jumped out early and never looked back in a 7-1 win over the Orem Owlz at Melaleuca Field.
With another good crowd of 2,527 in attendance, the Chukars scored twice in the first and answered Orem's second inning run with four more tallies of their own to go up 6-1. The Chukars would tack on one more run in the sixth to finish the scoring at 7-1.
Idaho Falls wasted no time in jumping on Owlz hurler Patrick Lowery, with left fielder Julio Aparicio driving in a run on a fielder's choice and center fielder Ethan Chapman knocking in the other with an infield single.
The second frame saw the Chukars score their four runs on four hits, with DH Adalberto Mondesi bringing home the first run on a bases loaded walk. Right fielder Elier Hernandez drove in the next despite reaching on an error, while Aparicio picked up his second RBI of the night with a single to center. The fourth run on the inning came in on a bases loaded double play hit into by Nicholas Cuckovich.
The final Idaho Falls run scored in the sixth when shortstop Jack Lopez drove in second baseman Carlos Garcia with an infield single.
Not to be outdone, the Chukars pitchers held up their end of the game as well holding Orem to just one run on eight hits. Starter Andrew Ferguson lasted the first four innings allowing the only Olwz run on a solo homer by Jonathan Walsh in the second. Ferguson gave up just five hits in his Pioneer League debut, striking out three and walking two.
The Chukars bullpen entered in the fifth and picked up right where Ferguson left off, tossing a combined five shutout innings to end the game. Andrew Triggs gave up only one hit in his inning pitched, followed by Royals 2nd round pick Sam Selman who went 2.2 shutout allowing one hit and striking out three. Lefty John Killen retired his only batter with a strikeout while Cory Hall closed out the ninth with two Ks. Selman (1-0) was awarded the win for his impressive debut, while Lowery (0-1) earned the loss for Orem. Offensively, Aparicio finished the game 1-3 with 2 RBI while Lopez went 2-4 with a RBI of his own.
With the win the Chukars improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2009 while Orem falls to 0-3. The Chukars 3-game sweep of Orem is the first such sweep since August of 2010. The Chukars will now welcome in the newly formed Grand Junction Rockies for a two-game series at Melaleuca Field, starting Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
