Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU-June 13, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks took the rubber match of a three game home series with La Crosse Monday night, defeating the Loggers 6-5 and clinching the series 2-1.
Nick Greene, who took the win in a four-inning outing in game one against the Loggers, notched his second win Monday- going six strong innings on only one day's rest.
Loggers' reliever Brandon Bixler took the loss - falling to 1-1 - as the Loggers fell to 6-7 and the 'Chucks advanced to 5-7.
Woodchucks' newcomer Adam Bileckyj struggled out of the gate in his first Athletic Park apperance, as he'd load the bases with no outs- on two walks and a Garrett Yrigoyen fielding error. Cameron Flynn would then be hit by a pitch, before Ethan Gross would hit an RBI single - making the score 2-0, with the bases loaded and no outs - before Bileckyj would recover and retire the next three hitters.
Bileckyj would get comfortable, recording the next five outs with relative ease - striking out four more batters - before losing his control with two down in the third inning.
Mike Hill would smack a two-out homer, making the score 3-0, Loggers, before Bilecky would walk two consecutive batters and allow an infield single - which would actually end the inning, as Robbie De La Cruz gunned down Zach Miller - who attempted to score on the infield hit - at home plate, after failing to record the out at first.
Down 3-0 early, the 'Chucks would get one back in the third, as starting catcher Tyler Heineman - fresh off the plane from UCLA - would walk, steal a bag, and score with two down, as Seth Batty reached on a Loggers' fielding error.
Nick Greene came on to start the fourth, allowing a leadoff walk to Trentt Copeland - who would go on to score on a wacky play - as the next batter, Cory LaVier, hit an infield single to the left side of the infield. Third baseman Austin Coleman made the throw late and wide of Robbie De La Cruz at first base, sending the ball into right field - before Robbie De La Cruz would throw the ball over the head of the covering Nick Greene at home plate, allowing Copeland to score.
Trying to catch the Loggers from behind again, the Northwoods League's top statistical hitter, Carlos Escobar Jr., would hit a one-out single in the fourth, and advance to second on a botched double play attempt on a following Mike Gerber groundball. After Shain Stoner would sacrifice both runners up one bag, Heineman would drive in both runners with a single up the middle - advancing to second as the ball got past centerfielder Cameron Flynn, who would gun down Heineman as he attempted to take third.
Down 4-3, the 'Chucks would briefly take the lead in the fifth, as Robbie De La Cruz and Seth Batty would reach base with a single and a double, before scoring on a Garrett Yrigoyen groundout and an Austin Coleman double.
Now leading the visiting Loggers by one, Nick Greene would allow a pinch-hit, game-tying homer to Bobby Juan, with two out and nobody on in the sixth, knotting up the score 5-5.
The 'Chucks would answer right back in the bottom of the frame, as Mike Gerber would start off the Woodchucks half of the sixth with a walk - before stealing second, and scoring on a wild pitch - giving the 'Chucks a 6-5 advantage.
Gerber's run would be all the 'Chucks needed, as Greene would pitch brilliantly on short rest- working through the final three innings, facing four batters apiece.
Greene allowed only five hits and two walks, while striking out seven in six innings pitched.
The 'Chucks prevailled in a messy, wacky rubbermatch, where seven errors where committed- as the Woodchucks would score six runs off only six hits and three walks.
The Woodchucks started a brand-new outfield and battery Monday night, as five of the six new arrivals over the past two days made their 'Chucks debut. The sixth newcomer, Tom Briner, will make the start Tuesday night, as the 'Chucks welcome the Waterloo Bucks to town for a two game set.
