Wausau Woodchucks News Release

WAUSAU - After a tough loss Wednesday night in Wisconsin Rapids, the Wisconsin Woodchucks looked to bounce back with a statement of their own at Athletic Park Thursday evening.

It was a rainy evening as the "˜Chucks and the Rafters once again squared up for the second series of four for the season Thursday night. The Woodchucks, in third place in the Northwoods League South, aimed to once again make a run at the number one spot, just two games out of first to the La Crosse Loggers.

The Woodchucks executed right off the bat with a two-out, two RBI double, by center fielder Brooks Braga in the bottom of the second inning making it a 2-0 game early on.

The Rafters responded immediately after in the third inning with a one out, two RBI double of their own, tying the game at two a piece.

The Rafters put another on the board in the fourth inning, when Alex Bacon scored on a fielder's choice throw to home that was called safe at the plate. The score after four innings of play was 3-2 Rafters.

The Rafters continued to swing a hot bat in the rain after three singles, with bases loaded, to score another two insurance runs to increase their lead to three.

However, the Woodchucks were not done yet. With bases loaded and no outs, catcher Levi Meyer hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Brooks Braga, bringing the Rafters lead down to a manageable two runs in the seventh inning.

Just as momentum was building for the "˜Chucks, the rain was progressively getting stronger, and it was decided the game would go to a rain delay.

After 40 minutes of consistent rain, the game was called. The Wisconsin Rafters walked away with a 5-3 win, and sent the Woodchucks into a two game slide.

Catch more Woodchuck action Friday in Wisconsin Rapids, and this weekend in La Crosse.
