Beetles lose first of five game series

Alexandria Beetles News Release

Waterloo, IA - Jimmy Pickens and Ryan Padilla each hit long fourth inning homeruns, but the Alexandria Beetles(5-10) couldn't overcome deficits of 5-0 after one and 8-0 after three as the Waterloo Bucks (12-4) won the first of a five game series by an 11-7 final.

The five Waterloo runs in the first scored with just one hit thanks to five walks and a hit batter.

After Waterloo added three more in the third, Pickens led off the fourth inning with a towering fly ball over the left-center field wall for his team-leading second homer of the year. One out later, Padilla, in his Beetles debut, uncorked a drive over the right-center wall that was still rising when it left the park.

Sean Borman hit a solo shot if his own in the bottom of the fourth before Alexandria rallied for another pair in the top of the fifth as a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Ben Moore brought the deficit to 9-4.

But the Beetle defense couldn't hold the deficit at five as a throwing error on a potential double play ball allowed two Waterloo runs to score in the bottom of the same inning.

A wild pitch and a Josh Carpenter single plated two in the sixth and a Pickens single in the seventh added another, but 11-7 was as close as the Beetles could get against the Northwoods-best Bucks.

The teams return to Riverfront Stadium at 6:35 CDT Friday.
