D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (July 14, 2005) - D.C. United midfielder Christian Gomez has been added to the MLS All-Star team that will face English Premier League club, Fulham FC, in the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game. Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber chose Gomez with one of his two Commissioner's picks, for the game to be played on July 30 at 3:30 p.m. ET (live on ABC Sports).
"We are thrilled that Commissioner Garber has selected Christian to the 2005 MLS All-Atar team," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "Since his arrival at D.C. United, Christian has become one of the most creative and dangerous attacking midfielders in the League."
Currently, Gomez is tied for third in the League with six goals and two assists. The Argentine midfielder was edged out of a starting spot by the New England Revolution's Shalrie Joseph by a mere .09 points in the weighted voting totals. Gomez, who is an instrumental player in United's midfield will be the only player from D.C. to compete in the 2005 MLS All-Star Game. This All-Star appearance is Gomez's first, following his late-season move to United in 2004.
Although Gomez has been with United for less than a year, he aided the Black-and-Red in clinching the 2004 MLS Cup championship and, with his offensive flair, he has greatly contributed to the offensive movement of the team on the field. Prior to his arrival on August 14 last year, United had a record of 6-8-6. After Gomez joined the team, the Black-and-Red finished the season with a record of 6-2-3, and then won four straight playoff games. All told, since his arrival in D.C., United has amassed an impressive record of 16-7-7. In 30 total games with United, Gomez has amassed 11 goals and two assists.
