New England Revolution News Release

Foxborough, Mass. -- Five New England Revolution players were named to the MLS All-Star team, which will take on English Premier League club Fulham FC in the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game on Saturday, July 30, at Columbus Crew Stadium (TV- ABC).

Midfielders Clint Dempsey and Shalrie Joseph and Goalkeeper Matt Reis were voted to the starting XI. Forward Pat Noonan was added as a reserve by head coach Colin Clarke and forward Taylor Twellman was added to the team as one of two Commissioner's picks. The starting XI was determined by online fan balloting (25 percent), media votes (25 percent), players (25 percent) and MLS coaches and GMs (25 percent).

In his second year playing soccer professionally, Clint Dempsey has taken MLS by storm. After making the All-Star Team in his first season and being named MLS Gatorade Rookie of the Year, Dempsey has continued his strong play this season. He is tied for sixth on the scoring leader board with six goals and has an MLS-leading five game-winning goals this season. With seven assists so far, he leads the league in assists-per-game with a 0.58 assists-per-game average. Dempsey, who came in second overall in the balloting for the All-Star team, was named Honda MLS Player of the Month for April this season. Along with teammates Noonan and midfielder Steve Ralston, Dempsey was called up to the U.S. National Team this year.

Shalrie Joseph, a Grenada native in his third season with the Revs, will be playing in his second consecutive All-Star Game. Joseph has been a dominating force in the central midfield for the Revolution ever since he joined the team. Joseph started 23 regular season games and all three playoff games last season, notching three assists in regular season play. Having played fifteen games so far this season, Joseph has totaled one goal and three assists.

In his eighth season since entering MLS in 1998 as a member of the Los Angles Galaxy, Matt Reis will be making his first All-Star appearance. After many years of playing backup to Galaxy goalie Kevin Hartman early in his career, Reis has hit his stride and is having his best season ever. He has been an imposing presence between the pipes and is at the top of the pack in most statistical categories for goalkeepers. He is first in Goals Against Average (GAA) (0.94), tied for first in shutouts (seven), second in saves percentage (76.4) and second in winning percentage (.719) this season. Reis came in fourth overall in the All-Star balloting. He is tied for the Revolution career record for shutouts (11).

Pat Noonan, in his third season in MLS, will be playing in his second consecutive All-Star game. After exceeding expectations with a 10-goal rookie season in 2003, Noonan had an even more successful 2004; he shared the 2004 MLS Budweiser Scoring Championship with MetroStars midfielder Amado Guevara, posting 11 goals and eight assists. This year, Noonan is tied for the league-lead in goals scored with eight. He was named Honda MLS Player of the Week for Week 13 (June 19-June 26) after scoring three goals in two games; it was the fourth time he has received the honor in his career.

In his fourth year in the league, Taylor Twellman will be appearing in his third All-Star game. The Revolution Honda Most Valuable Player in 2002 and 2003, Twellman has fought off injuries the past two seasons. This season, he was sidelined for a month after injuring his left hamstring on June 4. Despite having played in only twelve games this season, Twellman is the third leading scorer on the team with six goals and four assists. In 2002, Twellman became the first Revolution player ever to win the MLS Budweiser Scoring Championship.

The Revolution (9-2-5, 32 pts.) will host the Western Conference leaders FC Dallas (10-2-4, 34 pts.) at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 (TV - WB56; Radio - WEEI 850AM) at Gillette Stadium. Call 1-877-GET-REVS for ticket information.
