DAVIDSON, N.C. (Wednesday, July 13, 2005) - With a 120th-minute goal by forward Isaac Romo, Chivas USA defeated the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer Leagues Second Division 3-2 tonight at Davidson College to advance to the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, where it will meet the Los Angeles Galaxy on August 3 in a location to be determined.

The game's first goal was scored in just the 3rd minute by Chivas USA rookie Esteban Arias off a cross by Francisco Gómez, making his third straight start at central defender for the Red-and-White. But the Eagles would equalize 20 minutes later with a goal by Jacob Coggins off a long clearance by Charlotte 'keeper Chris McClellan.

"I think in the end when you look at all the chances, I think it's right we won the game," Chivas USA Head Coach Hans Westerhof told www.CDCHIVASUSA.com. "[Charlotte's] goalkeeper did well. He was the best man on the pitch."

The game would remain scoreless until the 80th minute, when Ben Johnson sent a through ball to Dustin Swinehert who, finding himself one-on-one with Brad Guzan, fired a high shot past the Chivas USA netminder. But Chivas USA battled back to pull even just three minutes later, Thiago Martins firing a low shot past McClellan from outside the penalty area.

With the Brazilian's goal, the match went to extra time, and was about to head to penalty kicks, when, in the 120th minute, Isaac Romo pounced on a rebound inside the Eagles' penalty area and slid to fire past McClellan and give Chivas USA its second victory in four days and a berth in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

"I'm very happy, because the whole game I was looking to score," said Romo. "I had a number of chances, but I think the goalkeeper had a great night, he was saving all of our shots. But in the last minute, I was able to take advantage."
