D.C. United News Release

Washington, D.C. (September 5, 2006) - Christian Gomez, D.C. United's inspirational midfielder and a leading MVP candidate, has been named Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 24. Gomez almost single-handedly pulled United out of their five-game winless streak, scoring both of the team's goals in a crucial 2-1 away win over Chivas USA on Sunday, September 3.

The award marks the second time in his career that Gomez has taken home Player of the Week honors. He previously won the award in Week 29 of the 2004 season. His two-goal performance on Saturday takes Gomez to a total of 10 goals on the year - third best in MLS -

to go along with his nine assists - second best in the League.

Gomez wasted no time in getting D.C. on the board, silencing the Home Depot Center crowd with a stunning free-kick goal in the third minute. After Freddy Adu was fouled at the edge of the penalty area, Gomez blasted the ball around the Chivas wall and into the back of Preston Burpo's net. The Argentine playmaker added a vital second goal in the 33rd minute, just seconds after Chivas had tied the score. After spinning by a Chivas defender at midfield, Gomez sprinted past two others before slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Following a U.S. Open Cup semifinal match with the Chicago Fire at TOYOTA Park tomorrow - Wednesday, Sept. 6 - the Black-and-Red will return home to face one of only three teams to defeat it this year, Real Salt Lake. Kickoff at RFK Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
