Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - After a loss on Tuesday that manager Sébastien Boucher called "terrible", the Ottawa Champions bounced back with five runs on eight hits and took the second game of a three-game series against the Rockland Boulders 5-3 on Wednesday.
Boucher was satisfied with his team's effort after they came out flat the night before.
"I think we did the little things that we didn't do yesterday," said Boucher. "We were able to score with guys in scoring positions and we were able to keep them at bay."
Austin Chrismon (1-1) struck out seven batters over six innings, giving up five hits and two walks in his third start of the 2019 campaign. Zach Vennaro came in for the save after Miles Sheehan allowed three runs over 2.2 innings.
Chrismon had all his pitches working on the night but credited a full team effort for helping him get his 25^thwin with the Champions.
"It helps me on the mound," said Chrismon of the run support he received. "It lets me not have to be so nitpicky and try to get people to chase every pitch."
"We had great defense and put up runs when we needed to and came out on top."
Boucher thought Chrismon was in control of the game through the six innings he pitched.
"Austin gave us a solid start," said Boucher. "He kept them to only five hits and he had some base runners on, but he was able to have good command of his breaking ball and put it in the dirt when he wanted to. Whenever you have command of your pitches, you can do some damage there."
On offense, Steve Brown went 2-for-4 with a home run and Brian Portelli drove in two RBIs in the win.
Brown extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth with his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall.
Andy Mocahbee also hit his first dinger of the year over the left field wall to give the Champions a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Brian Portelli smacked a double deep to right that scored Maikol Gonzalez and Jiandido Tromp in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0 Champions. Vinny Guglietti was thrown out at the plate on the same play to end the inning.
Jordan Caillouet opened the scoring in the bottom of the second for Ottawa, grounding out to second and driving in Steve Brown. Brown was put into scoring position off a Cito Culver error after Portelli hit a ground ball that should have led to a double play. Culver threw the ball away from 2B Ryne Birk, allowing Portelli and Brown to reach second and third, respectively.
Pasquale Mazzoccoli (1-1) gave up four earned runs on eight hits through six innings in the loss for Rockland. Meanwhile, former Champion Chase Harris went 4-for-4 with an RBI.
The two teams close out this three-game series tomorrow night at RCGT Park at 7:05 p.m.
