Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS - Chris McGuiness, the Frisco RoughRiders' everyday first baseman in 2012, has been promoted from Triple-A Round Rock to the Texas Rangers and will be in uniform for the team's game in Boston tonight. When he appears in a game, he will become the 100th former RoughRiders player to play in the major leagues.
McGuiness, 25, spent all of last season with the RoughRiders. In his first year at Double-A, the Charleston, South Carolina native hit .268 and clubbed 23 home runs with 25 doubles and 77 RBI in 123 games. The left-handed batter was second on the team in home runs and slugging percentage and was third in on-base percentage.
The Rangers announced today that Texas had purchased the contract of McGuiness. He is taking the spot on the active roster voided by the departure of Mitch Moreland, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list; Colby Lewis was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster. If McGuiness makes his major league debut tonight, it will be against the team that originally drafted him; the Boston Red Sox selected him in the 13th round in 2009 out of The Citadel.
When McGuiness makes his debut, he will become the 100th player to reach the major leagues following a stint in Frisco. He will be the sixth RoughRiders alumnus this season to make the big leagues, joining Joseph Ortiz (95), Leury Garcia (96), Nick Tepesch (97), Robbie Erlin (98) and Ross Wolf (99).
