CHL tabs Guzior as player of the week

EL PASO, Texas â El Paso Buzzards' left winger Russ Guzior has been selected as the Central Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 16-22. Guzior is the first Buzzards player selected for the CHL honor this season, as chosen by the CHL league office.
"It is an honor to receive this award because of how well the team is playing right now," said Guzior, the Montreal Canadiens 11th round draft choice in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. "I just want to give 110 percent every time out on the ice and hopefully more of my teammates will be awarded with this as well."
Guzior, 28, led the Buzzards to back-to-back home wins over New Mexico and San Angelo over the weekend, figuring in five of the team's nine goals. In a 4-2 win over New Mexico on December 20, the Chicago native and Buzzards' captain scored his 13th goal of the season, then potted a hat trick and an assist the following evening in a 5-3 win over San Angelo. Guzior's 16 goals have him tied for the sixth spot in the CHL, and he is well on pace to top his career high of 28, set with the Mobile Mysticks of the East Coast Hockey League during the 1999-2000 season. The 5-foot-10-inch, 190 lb. forward has accumulated 16 goals and nine assists with a plus/minus rating of +4 in 21 games this season.
"Russ is an outstanding leader and two-way player," said Buzzards' head coach Craig Coxe. "He's gritty, tough, smart and fluid out on the ice. He's our team captain for a reason."
The Buzzards look to improve upon their two-game home winning streak when El Paso plays at 7 p.m. Friday, at the El Paso County Coliseum, against the Lubbock Cotton Kings. On Saturday, the Buzzards will host the Odessa Jackalopes at the Nest beginning at 7 p.m.
