FULLERTON, Calif. (Tuesday, June 26, 2012) - Chivas USA defeated the Charlotte Eagles, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup before a crowd of 1,230 at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium Tuesday night. All three goals came in the second half. Forward Jose Correa gave the Rojiblancos the first advantage, Mauricio Salles scored the equalizer and Correa knocked in the game-winner in stoppage time.
- With the victory, Chivas USA now advances to the semifinals of the tournament for the second time ever and face Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders, Tuesday, July 10, at Starfire Sports Complex at 7 p.m. PT.
- Chivas USA went up a goal in the 64th minute when Correa took a pass from sub Juan Agudelo and worked the ball on the right wing passed an Eagles defender and beat Charlotte goalkeeper Clint Irwin to the back of the net. The assist was Agudelo's second in the tournament.
- The Eagles nearly pushed the game into extra time when sub Salles recovered a deflected ball inside the box and shot it passed Tim Melia's net in the 89th minute.
- Minutes later the Rojiblancos took advantage in stoppage time when midfielder Laurent Courtois notched his second assist in the tournament when he took a free kick from deep on the right wing and served it into the box, where Correa headed-in the game-winner.
- The Red and White looked every bit the aggressor in the first half, as they had several dangerous looks near the Eagles net. A Correa header inside the short area floated just over the crossbar in the 30th minute. They had another excellent look in minute 44 when Courtois fired a shot from about ten yards out near the left post that was deflected out of bounds by Irwin. The Goats outshot Charlotte, 16-9, for the overall match.
- The next MLS game for Chivas USA will be held at The Home Depot Center against Western Conference rivals Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday July 7th at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The match will broadcast on television, live on KDOC in English, and KWHY Channel 22 in Spanish.
