Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Allowing just five hits and striking out eight batters, starting pitcher Luis Chirinos guided the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to an 8-5 win over the Edinburg RoadRunners as WhiteWings manager Eddie Dennis recorded his 400th career win.

Chirinos, with the solid performance on the mound, goes to 4-2 on the year as he helps the WhiteWings move to 31-24 on the year.

Toro Trevino gets the loss for Edinburg as the RoadRunners drop to 23-33 on the year.

Through the sixth inning, Chirinos was nearly untouchable, as he allowed just three hits and one run while striking out seven.

It took until the seventh inning before the RoadRunners could string together consecutive hits on Chirinos, but by then it was too late as the WhiteWings held a 7-1 lead.

The WhiteWings got on the board first as they grabbed an early 1-0 lead thanks to a David Peralta homerun, his team-leading 14th of the year, over the left field wall.

Edgar Trejo made the score 2-0 in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly and two batters later, Carl Johnson helped give ‘Wings a 3-0 lead with an RBI single.

An RBI single the next inning from Pino allowed the WhiteWings to grab a 4-0 lead.

Edinburg finally connected off of Chirinos in the bottom of the fifth when former WhiteWing Welington Dotel homered deep to left field to cut the WhiteWings lead to 4-1. It was only the third hit given up by Chirinos.

The WhiteWings grabbed three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to grab a 7-1 lead. Antonio DeJesus scored on a passed ball while Wilmer Pino collected his third RBI of the night with a three-run shot over the left field wall.

Edinburg responded with four unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings to draw within two, as they trailed 7-5.

Yet Edgar Martinez put the brakes on any potential rally as he grabbed his league-leading 16th save of the year.

The WhiteWings close out the series against Edinburg on Saturday night as the WhiteWings look to clinch the season series against Edinburg as they are 16-5 already this year against the RoadRunners.
