Late Rally Falls Short For The Roadrunners

EDINBURG, Texas-The Edinburg Roadrunners sent the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but their rally fell short as they lost 8-5 to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

With two outs in the top of the first, the WhiteWings (31-24) got on the scoreboard with a solo home run by David Peralta making it 1-0.

A sacrifice fly by Edgar Trejo in the top of the fourth allowed Leivi Ventura to score from third. Gabriel Ortiz followed with a double and then came into score on an RBI single by Carl Johnson that pushed RGV's lead 3-0.

After an RBI single by Wilmer Pino in the top of the fifth for the WhiteWings, Wellington Dotel got the Roadrunners (23-33) on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth off of RGV starter Luis Chirinos making it 4-1 ‘Wings.

RGV added to their lead in the top of the seventh after a passed ball allowed Peralta to score from third. Pino then followed with a two-run home run to deep left field extending their lead 7-1.

The Roadrunners responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. RBI fielder's choices by Dotel and Derek Marshall cut the WhiteWings lead 7-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Robert Matlock hit a bases loaded two-run single that allowed Jonathan Fernandez and C.J. Beatty to score inching the Roadrunners closer 7-5.

The WhiteWings added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with an RBI single by Ortiz that made it 8-5.

Edinburg sent the tying run to the plate but Edgar Martinez struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth giving RGV the 8-5 victory.

Chirinos (4-2) picked up the win after allowing three runs on five hits and striking out eight in seven innings pitched.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will wrap up their series with the fourth game Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Jorge Quintero (3-6) is expected to face Chase Davenport (5-3) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
