Chinooks Split With Eau Claire
July 19, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
Last Monday, the Lakeshore Chinooks took on the Eau Claire Express. The team was originally ruled to have won the game 3-0 after it was officially called following the sixth inning, but the Northwoods League later re-opened the game to be finished on Sunday before the teams' already-scheduled game.
Game One: Lakeshore 7, Eau Claire 0
Jack Landwehr (Illinois State) took the mound for the top of the seventh as the Chinooks took the field. He gave up a pair of hits in his first inning but escaped a first and third, one out jam to get out of the inning unharmed.
The Chinooks padded their lead in the bottom half of the seventh, adding four runs. Doug Kraeger (Richmond) legged out an infield single to lead off the frame, and after Colby Fitch (Louisville) walked, Kraeger advanced to third on a Mark Kolozsvary (Florida) fly out. Kraeger then came around to score on a sac fly hit by Greg Deichmann (Louisiana State). A double hit by Zarley Zalewski (Kent State) brought Fitch home, and then Zalewski scored a run of his own on a David Edson (USC) single. The final run of the inning came when Edson was plated by a single off the bat of Anthony Massicci (Canisius), making it 7-0.
Landwehr came back out on the mound for Lakeshore in the eighth inning, and he responded with another scoreless inning. He also threw a shutout ninth for the Chinooks, earning the save in the process with his three scoreless innings.
Game Two: Eau Claire 10, Lakeshore 4
The Chinooks sent John Schreiber (Kent State) to the mound for his third start and ninth total appearance of the summer. He let up a run in the first, though it was unearned after an error by first baseman Doug Kraeger (Richmond) let Brady Burzynski (UW-Stout) score. Schreiber held Eau Claire scoreless in the second but ran into trouble in the third.
The Express loaded the bases with one out in the third, and their first run of the inning came around to score when Tyler Adkison (San Diego State) singled. Schreiber managed to get the next batter to fly out shallow enough that the runners could not advance, but then gave up a bases-clearing double to Michael Papierski (LSU) to make it 5-0. The bleeding did not stop there, however. Shortstop Anthony Massicci (Canisius) made an error on a ball hit by Nathan Krause (Winona State), letting Papierski come home. A double from Daniel Jipping (Central Michigan) scored Krause, and Schreiber was pulled from the game after walking the next batter.
Nick Brown (Missouri State) gave up a double to the first batter he faced, Burzynski, which plated Jipping. Brown then induced a ground out to end the inning. Altogether, Schreiber was credited with 2.2 innings pitched while giving up eight runs, four earned, and striking out three.
The Chinooks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth to narrow the eight-run gap. Jake Romano (Miami-Ohio) and Greg Deichmann (LSU) smacked back-to-back base knocks with one out in the frame, and Mark Kolozsvary (Florida) walked to load the bases. The club scored their first run of the game courtesy of David Edson (USC), who drew a walk off of Eau Claire starter Michael Gomez (Cal Ply) to bring in Romano. Drake Parker (Vanderbilt) kept the offense going in the inning, plating Deichmann with a single to right field. Two more runs came around to score thanks to Lucas Raley (Lake Erie College), who legged out an infield single to let both Edson and Kolozsvary score to make it 8-4.
Brown had a great relief outing for Lakeshore as he tried to keep his team's hopes alive. He fired 4.1 innings and was not charged with a run. Brown allowed just one hit in his entire outing while walking three and striking out two.
Manager Eddy Morgan elected to replace Brown with Parker Sanburn (Arkansas) for the eighth inning. The Express added a run off of him, albeit one that was unearned, to extend their lead to 9-4. He gave up another run in the ninth, making the score 10-4 before he was replaced by Ryan Dunne (John Logan College) with two outs in the inning.
The Chinooks were held scoreless for the rest of the game as the score ended at 10-4 .The Northwoods League All-Star break will begin on Monday, giving the majority of the Lakeshore squad three days off. The team will have two representatives in the All-Star game on Tuesday in Raley and Lake Bachar (UW-Whitewater), and Raley will also take part in the Home Run Challenge on Tuesday as well.
