Anchors hang on to defeat Honkers 5-4

Alexandria, Minn. - The Blue Anchors defeated the Rochester Honkers 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The Anchors second half record is now 11-8 going into the All Star Break and 23-31 overall.

The Blue Anchors got on the board early in the first inning. Nehwon Norkeh doubled to start the game but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Dane Hutcheon. After a fly out, Ricky Sanchez singled and the throw to first went out of play to put him and Hutcheon in scoring position. With two outs, Matt Duce lifted a fly ball over the fence in right-centerfield to put the Anchors up 3-0.

In the second inning, the Blue Anchors continued flexing their muscles. Anthony Mrosla singled to start the inning and Drew Fearing pounced on the first pitch he saw and sent it over the fence for a two-run homer increasing their lead to 5-0.

The game got very close in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Matt Fiedler lifted a home run to right field for a grand slam cutting the Anchors lead down to one. Kody Knaus was able to pick up the save however and close out the 5-4 victory.

Ky Zimmel, making his season debut, pitched four shutout innings and allowed just three hits and two walks and he struck out six batters. Tyler Hasper (1-0) got the win pitching two shutout innings giving up just a hit and a walk with two punch outs. Mitch Larson pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Knaus got his first save recording the final out of the game.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Ky Zimmel (SP) - Even though he didn't collected the win, Zimmel gave the Anchors a solid start in his season debut.

Notes: The Blue Anchors are off for three days for the Northwoods League All Star Game...The All Star Game is being hosted by the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters and will be played on Tuesday, July 21st...The Anchors return home on Thursday to take on the Mankato MoonDogs at Knute Nelson Memorial Park...Thursday is Diekman's Jewelry annual Diamond Dig and all women at the park have the chance to dig for treasure around the infield for treasure...ON the Alex Brick & Stone Terrace there will be many vendors for fans...The game, starting at 7:05 pm, can be seen live at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/nwl/.
