Peoria Chiefs News Release
Appleton, WI - The Peoria Chiefs hurlers combined on a two-hitter and a 2-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon. With the win the Chiefs earned a series split and head to Cedar Rapids 2-2 on the season.
Peoria regained the lead in the 8th inning against the Wisconsin bullpen. With two outs, Dylan Johnston singled off lefthander Rollie Gibson and Davy Gregg followed with an infield hit. Ruben Flores relieved Gibson and walked Robinson Chirinos to load the bases. With Brandon Taylor at the plate, Flores uncorked a wild pitch allowing Johnston to score from third with the go-ahead run. Flores recovered to strike out Taylor to end the inning.
The game was scoreless into the 6th inning when Johnston greeted Rattlers reliever Jeff Gilmore with a leadoff double down the left field line. With one out, Johnston advanced to third on a deep fly out to center by Chirinos. During the next at-bat, Johnston scampered home for the game's first run when the pitch from Gillmore got away from catcher Nick Prosise.
Wisconsin was held hitless by Jesus Yepez through five innings before Eddy Hernandez doubled off the left field wall with one out in the 6th. After a ground out, Casey Craig reached on an infield single to second and Hernandez never slowed down rounding third and scored ahead of the tag to tie the game 1-1.
Yepez allowed one run on two hits over six innings. The left-hander threw just 68 pitches and walked two while striking out two. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and faced the minimum through five innings. He also picked off the first Rattler to reach base after a walk to end the 4th.
Mike Phelps (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief picking up two strikeouts to preserve the 2-1 lead. Ed Campusano picked up his second save of the season by retiring the Rattlers in order in the 9th. The left-hander struck out two including Ron Garth to end the game.
