Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Peoria Chiefs defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Three Peoria pitchers allowed just two hits. Four Rattler pitchers gave up only five hits. But, a run scoring passed ball in the the sixth and a run scoring wild pitch in the eighth gave the Chiefs enough to win.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Marwin Vega worked five scoreless innings and gave up one hit while striking out four without a walk. Jesus Yepez, the Peoria starter, tossed no-hit ball for the first 5-1/3 innings of his six innings of work.

The Chiefs (2-2) broke up the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. Dylan Johnston started the inning with a double off Rattler reliever Jeff Gilmore. Johnston was standing on third with two outs and it looked like Gilmore would get out of the inning. But, a passed ball allowed Johnston to score the first run of the game.

The Rattlers rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Eddy Hernandez doubled with one out for the first Rattler hit of the afternoon. Casey Craig stepped to the plate with Hernandez still at second and two outs. Craig beat out an infield single on a slow roller to second and Hernandez scored by making a sprint for the plate -- just beating the throw home to make the score 1-1.

Rattler reliever Rollie Gibson retired the first two Chief batters of the eighth inning. But, Johnston reached on a single and Davy Gregg followed with another single. Ruben Flores, the fourth Rattler pitcher of the game, relieved Gibson and promptly walked Robinson Chirinos to load the bases. Flores then threw a wild pitch with Brandon Taylor at the plate and Johnston scored to put the Chiefs back in front.

Winning pitcher Michael Phelps, who came on in the seventh, worked a scoreless eighth. Ed Campusano closed out the Rattlers with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save of the season.

The Rattlers hit the road for the first time this season on Monday. Wisconsin will be in Beloit to meet the Snappers. Jose Escalona is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. Oswaldo Sosa makes the start for the Snappers. Game time at Pohlman Field is 6:30pm.
