December 7, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Langley, B.C. -- The Spokane Chiefs used a two-goal opening period Friday night to claim the 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants, evening the season series at 1-1.
Spokane first struck just 1:22 into the game when Bear Hughes flipped a puck up the right side that was chased down by Luke Toporowski, who dished a beautiful backhand pass from the goal line between the circles where Eli Zummack put it home to give the Chiefs the 1-0 lead.
D-man Matt Leduc padded the Spokane lead at 14:14 when he fired a rocket from near the blue line, finding the net and improving the fourth year blueliner's season goal total to three. Tristien Nielsen answered for the Giants just before the period expired, scoring what proved to be the game's final score at 19:45 of the first period.
Rookie goaltender Campbell Arnold stepped up in a spot start once again for the Chiefs, recording his third 30-save game of the season en route to the victory. The 17-year-old ranks third among first-year netminders with a 2.47 GAA on the season.
Arnold ended the night 30-of-31 for Spokane and Vancouver goalie David Tendeck went 22-of-24. The Chiefs went 0-for-3 on the power play and the Giants were held 1-for-4.
