Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium. After the game was delayed 43 minutes by rain, the Yankees won for the second time in as many nights as the home team in the Chiefs' ballpark.

For the first time since June 29, Syracuse (44-50) scored in the first inning. Batting in the top half of the frame as the road team, the Chiefs had two outs and no one on base before beginning a rally against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter John Maine. Jim Negrych walked, Jesus Valdez singled, and Mark Teahen walked as well to load the bases. That set the stage for All-Star Carlos Rivero to come up with a timely two-out opposite-field single to right field to score both Negrych and Valdez, as Syracuse took a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs' lead didn't last long, however. Syracuse starter Zach Duke retired the first four batters he faced on Sunday, but with one out in the second inning, Brandon Laird knocked a double off the wall in straightaway center. Cole Garner followed with a single that put runners on the corners for Gustavo Molina. The former Syracuse catcher lined a three-run homer down the right-field line to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 3-2 advantage.

The International League wild card-leading Yankees added a fourth run in the third, thanks to a leadoff double to right by Corban Joseph. The second baseman came home to score two batters later on a Jack Cust run-scoring single to left.

Meanwhile, after allowing two runs in the first, John Maine settled in to protect the 4-2 edge for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (52-43). Though Maine walked four batters, he struck out four and surrendered only two hits in six innings to earn the win. The one-time 15-game winner with the Mets picked up his third victory since joining the Yankees in mid-June.

For his part, Duke didn't allow another run after the third inning. The left-hander threw 115 pitches over seven innings, but didn't receive the offensive support necessary to avoid the loss.

Cory Wade tossed three innings of scoreless relief for the Yankees to pick up the save. On the other side for Syracuse, Christian Garcia threw a perfect eighth inning.

Syracuse travels to Pawtucket to start a four-game series in Rhode Island on Monday at 7:05. Yunesky Maya is scheduled to pitch for the Chiefs against Red Sox starter Tony Pena Jr.
