Peoria Chiefs News Release

Beloit, WI - Peoria pitching retired 16 straight at one point to boost the Chiefs to a 5-1 win in Sunday's series finale at Beloit.

The teams traded runs in the first before the Peoria pitching settled in. In the top of the inning, Masyn Winn reached on an error and was standing at third with no one out in the inning. The next batter, Mike Antico, recorded a sac fly to give Peoria the early 1-0 advantage. Austin Love, who beat the Sky Carp on Tuesday, was on the mound for Peoria. After two quick outs, a single and a double got the Sky Carp back to square one.

From there, the pitching settled in. With the score still tied, Love retired the final two batters he faced in the fourth and sent the 1-1 deadlock to the fifth. In the top of the fifth, a second sac fly, this time from Aaron Antonini, made it 2-1 Peoria.

Now pitching with a lead, Love sent the Sky Carp down in order in the bottom of the fifth to qualify for a win. Love allowed just the one run in five innings and whiffed six.

In the top of the sixth, the Chiefs scored via a different method, as Matt Chamberlain connected on his second homer of the year and his second career long ball at ABC Supply Stadium.

From there, the bullpen was electrifying. John Beller pitched two scoreless and extended the streak of consecutive hitters retired to 11.

After a third Peoria sac fly from Masyn Winn, made it 4-1, it was Nathanael Heredia's turn to face the Sky Carp. The left-hander worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, complete with a strikeout of Cody Morissette.

In the ninth, the Chiefs scored once more for good measure. With Winn aboard at first, Antico doubled off the mitt of Beloit right fielder Tanner Allen, which allowed Winn to motor all the way from first. In an offensive oddity, the Chiefs scored five runs in all four wins this week.

In the home half of the ninth, Gianluca Dalatri recorded the first two outs, but a sun-aided double ended the streak of 16 straight retired. Dalatri quickly dispatched Tanner Allen to end the game. With the win, the Chiefs collected their first road series win since August of 2019.

The Chiefs are off on Monday before returning home to face the Lake County Captains for a six-game series, which kicks off on Tuesday from Dozer Park. Tickets are still available for all six contests. Fans can purchase tickets online at peoriachiefs.com, in-person at the box office or by calling (309) 680-4000.
