Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash - The Spokane Chiefs scored four goals in the first period and Jake McGrew earned his first WHL hat trick in a wild 8-6 win over the Victoria Royals at Spokane Arena on Friday night.

After a power play goal by the Royals broke the ice for the game's first goal at the 4:14 mark of the first, the Chiefs offense exploded midway through the period to take control.

McGrew punched in a rebound for his first of the night at the 10:12 mark. Riley Woods made a perfect deflection from the left side to score his fifth of the season to make it 2-1 Spokane at the 10:32 mark. Fifty seconds later, Eli Zummack got in on the action, completing a smooth tic-tac-toe play on the power play for his third of the season. Hayden Ostir finished the flurry with 7:13 left in the period, firing a one-timer in from the left circle to make it 4-1. Czech defenseman Filip Kral, in his first game with the Chiefs, picked up an assist on the Ostir goal.

In all, the Chiefs scored four goals in 2:35 on the game clock, just 15 seconds shy of a franchise record of 2:20 set way back in 1994.

After alternating three goals apiece to get to a 7-4 score, McGrew took the puck coast-to-coast down the right side before snapping his hat trick goal over the left shoulder of replacement goaltender Dean McNabb.

Two late goals from the Royals were not enough as Spokane held on to get back over a .500 record at 5-4-0-0 and push Victoria to their first regulation loss of the season.

The Chiefs finished the game 2-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Spokane remains home Saturday night to host the rival Tri-City Americans on Leinenkugel's Hocktoberfest and Leavenworth Trip Giveaway Night at Spokane Arena. Festivities inside the Arena will begin at 4 p.m.

Tickets for Saturday night and all Chiefs home games are available in-person at the Chiefs' Ticket Office, over the phone at 509-535-PUCK and online at spokanechiefs.com.
