Chiefs Give Away Lead & Game in Rain on Thursday

Beloit, WI- The Peoria Chiefs gave up a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh and lost to the Beloit Snappers 6-5 in eight innings in game one of a scheduled double header on Thursday. After game one was delayed 70 minutes and played entirely in rain, game two was postponed. The two teams will attempt to play two seven-inning games on Friday starting at 4:00 p.m. in Wisconsin.

Both teams got on the board in the second inning with solo home runs. Patrick Wisdom led off the top of the second with his seventh homer of the season, under the scoreboard in left-center. The blast, coming off Austin House, ties Wisdom for the Chiefs and Midwest League lead with Jacob Wilson. Beloit bounced back in their half as Rashun Dixon took Hector Hernandez deep to left to tie the game with one out.

Breyvic Valera reached base with two outs in the top of the third and moved to second on a wild pitch. Charlie Tilson drew a walk and both runners moved up on another wild pitch by House. With Wilson batting, a third wild pitch in the rain plated Valera to put the Chiefs on top. Wilson walked and Jordan Walton singled home Tilson for a 3-1 Chiefs lead. Peoria added on in the fifth when Walton again delivered a two-out single to plate Valera for a 4-1 lead.

Hernandez cruised through four innings but walked Matt Olson to start the fifth and ran into trouble. Dixon lined a single off the left foot of Hernandez and with one out, Chad Lewis double home both runners to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-3. Hernandez got the second out before giving way to Mike Aldrete who escaped the inning with the Chiefs still up by one.

Neither team scored in the sixth inning and the Chiefs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh against Kris Hall. Valera reached on a fielders' choice and scored on a triple to right-center by Tilson for a 5-3 Chiefs lead.

With the Chiefs two outs from evening the series, John Wooten singled to left and Lewis doubled to the wall to put the tying run in scoring position. Pinch hitter Bruce Maxwell singled to left to cut the lead to 5-4 as Lewis was held at third. Aldrete got Brett Vertigan to hit a shallow fly ball to left by Ildemaro Vargas and Michael Swinson both went for the ball which hit Swinson's glove and fell in allowing the tying run to score. The error extended the inning but Aldrete kept the game tied with a flyout and strikeout.

The Chiefs left a runner at first base in the top of the eighth. Reliever Joe Scanio got the first out in the bottom of the inning before Olson doubled over the head of Swinson in left on a misplayed line drive. With Dixon batting, a pair of wild pitches scored Olson and gave Beloit a 6-5 win.

Hernandez allowed three runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out five. He allowed a home run and threw a wild pitch. Aldrete allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits over 2 1/3 innings while striking out two. Scanio (1-1) allowed one run on one hit in 1/3 of an inning with two wild pitches.
