Lansing Lugnuts News Release
DAYTON, OH - Amidst the hoopla of a Johnny Cueto rehab start, it was once again early offense that led the Dayton Dragons (12-20) to a 9-6 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (9-21) at Fifth Third Field on Thursday night.
Cueto, making a rehab start for the parent club of the Dragons, the Cincinnati Reds, got plenty of offense early on from his offense.
Lugnuts starter Javier Avenda̮̱o (Loss, 2-2) got beaten around early, as he lasted just three innings, allowing eight runs to the Dragons.
Dayton batted around in the first inning, plating five runs before adding one in the second and two more in the third inning, chasing Avenda̮̱o from the game.
Six of the eight runs allowed by Avenda̮̱o were earned, given up on seven hits. He struck out four and walked four.
A member of the Dayton Dragons in 2006, Cueto was restricted to three innings by a 60-pitch limit in the no-decision, allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Dragons' southpaw Ismael Guillon (Win, 1-4) took the win with four innings of relief, but allowed four innings to the Lugnuts. Guillon was effectively wild, striking out nine batters and walking two, with four earned runs given up on five hits.
The Lugnuts comeback effort began in the eighth against Guillon, but was too little, too late.
In the loss, Carlos Ramirez blasted another home run in the top of the eighth inning, pulling Lansing to within 9-4 of the Dragons. Kellen Sweeney followed later with a run-scoring triple that brought the Lugs to within 9-5. A groundout RBI by Christian Lopes made the score 9-6 in the ninth, but Ben Klimesh shut the door on the Lugnuts with a strikeout of Ramirez to end the game.
With the win, Dayton has secured a series victory over Lansing. The Lugnuts will try to prevent a sweep on Friday night with lefty Alonzo Gonzalez (1-2, 6.23) taking on Dragons right-hander Pedro Diaz (0-2, 4.61) with first-pitch set for 7:00 p.m.
