Chiefs Fans in a Giving Mood
December 7, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Last weekend the Chiefs enjoyed two successful games, winning both, but it was the combined crowd of 12,565 fans that showed their support of the community with their generosity.
Through two different promotions, Chiefs fans helped Second Harvest Inland Northwest, The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund, Toys for Tots and children in local hospitals.
Prior to the Chiefs 3-2 overtime win versus Medicine Hat on Friday night Chiefs' fans donated 2,979 pounds of food to Second Harvest Inland Northwest through the Washington's Lottery Food Drive. The Chiefs gave one scratch ticket to fans for every two cans of food that they brought to the game. The donations will help feed 2,291 families in the Spokane area, Rod Wieber, Chief Resource Office at Second Harvest said. Second Harvest provides 1.5 million pounds of donated food each month to help feed hungry people in the Spokane area.
On Saturday night, a franchise record 4,668 stuffed animals were tossed onto the ice in the annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund which is used to help provide gifts during the holiday season to the less fortunate in the Spokane community.
A number of players also took some of the bears to local hospitals, including Sacred Heart Children's Hospital, Shriner's Hospital and Providence Holy Family Hospital's Speech and Hearing Center.
Chiefs' fans have also donated a number of toys to Toys for Tots during the first two games in December. Toys for Tots donations can be made at the Arena for the remaining four home games prior to the holiday break.
Spokane will host the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday night and Kamloops Saturday night this week.
Tickets for all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
