Chiefs Fans Help Raise $13,000 to Support Breast Cancer Care and Research
March 7, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs' community initiative, Chiefs Care, recently presented the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Eastern Washington Affiliate with a check for $13,000 to help support the Spokane community, particularly those affected by breast cancer. Funds were raised throughout the 2015-16 regular season, culminating on Mike's Hard Pink Lemonade Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Helmet Giveaway on February 20 as the Chiefs defeated the rival Tri-City Americans, 4-2 at Spokane Arena.
"Funds raised will be used to fund local programs for women in Eastern Washington such as the Livestrong program, the Sacred Heart Mammography van, and Faye's House, which provides housing for those going through treatment," said Becky Duffey, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Eastern Washington Affiliate. "We want to raise Breast Cancer awareness and save lives by doing so. Last year we were able to provide over $360,000 in funding to help provide much needed resources in our community."
Seventy-five percent of all funds raised by the Eastern Washington affiliate stay within their service area to fund breast health programs for women and men who would not otherwise have access to screening and treatment. Twenty-five percent of funds raised supports the Susan G. Komen Grants program for innovative research.
"The support from the community was amazing to see. When all the people stood up who knew someone who had breast cancer, it brought tears to myself and (ceremonial first puck dropper) Kristie's eyes," Duffey continued. "All the pink in the stands was fantastic!"
Funds were raised primarily through the sales of special edition breast cancer awareness t-shirts and the auction of the unique pink-accented specialty jerseys worn by the Chiefs during the game.
"Our organization has always felt it is important to give back to the community that supports us," said Chiefs' Vice President of Sponsorships Jay Stewart. "We're proud to continue our partnership with Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington and we're excited that this donation will help so many people in the Spokane area."
The Chiefs host three games this week - on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday - for their final regular season home games of the season. All three begin at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the Chiefs' remaining home games are available via TicketsWest online at www.ticketswest.com and via the Chiefs' Ticket Office in-person or over the phone at 509-535-PUCK.
